Photographs inherently show absence. Once it has been taken, the moment is gone and the image of what was is all that is left behind. Retrospect encapsulates Dobbin’s exploration in the tension between real life and its documentation. Through this artwork where her personal photographs have been transformed Dobbin displays her reflection and sadness in the closing of a chapter in her life. This has only been enhanced as the impact of the coronavirus has prematurely ended the university semester meaning a lack of closure.
