Madeline Shipley
Using photography as documentation has been a constant within Madeline Shipley’s practice, being drawn to capturing both natural and urban landscapes and structures. Attracted to exploring abandonment, decay and ruin, she seeks to find the neglect and dereliction. Within these sites, she has explored the spaces, perspectives, observations and abstractions within reflection, using this within her images.

The project Questionable Space is site specific to Nettleham Hall. Shipley has constructed and used mirrored cubes to explore the spaces, perspectives and abstractions that come with reflection. Shipley has been using this within her images of Nettleham to reflect the spaces that the camera's perspective may not see. Inspired by Wabi Sabi (the beauty in imperfection) Shipley has embraced this within her project, capturing the site from all angles, hiding nothing from view. The sharp images combined with the reflection add an abstract look, questioning both the space, and if the cube belongs in the image.
